Problem Statement: Create an artwork that visually demonstrates understanding of 3 aesthetic theories of art: Imitationalism, Emotionalism, and Formalism through varied interpretations of an everyday object.
Sketchbook Assignments
Imitational Idea Generation: (10pts) Learn more about your object by completing a blind contour line drawing. Only move your pencil as fast as your eyes can take in all the visual information it sees so that you are capturing every. single. minute. detail. This should take at least 5 minutes. After you've completed the watercolor techniques sketchbook page below, you're going to start to intensely inspect the color of your object. Mix the watercolor paints on your palette until you achieve the exact colors you see and apply them to relevant areas of your blind contour drawing (it doesn't matter where you place them now - just try to show a range of values and use all of the colors you see)
Watercolor Techniques: (20pts)
Emotionalism Idea Generation: (20pts) In your sketchbook, draw 8 frames and complete 8 small drawings that abstractly capture 8 different emotions. The drawings cannot be representational - no pictures or symbols that represent anything. Stick to abstract lines and shapes of any thickness or type. Just think about the word for a moment, how it makes you feel, and try to interpret that feeling using different types of marks placed with intention.
After you've taken notes on Emotional Associations with Color, add expressive color to your thumbnail drawings to help covey the mood, emotion, or feeling you're after,
Formalism Idea Generation: (10pts)
Break down your object to it’s simplest elements – what shapes, colors, lines, textures, etc.. do you see? Draw each isolated element as a separate object on a page in your sketchbook.
On a facing page, draw 2 frames. Using the principles of design, alter and recombine the elements you’ve isolated to fill the space in an interesting way .
Remember careful planning and craftsmanship - formalism is about intentional and interesting design.
