Scratchboard
Problem Statement: Fur, feather or scales? Choose a creature that clearly demonstrates visual TEXTURE and CONTRAST. You will be developing a drawing that defines light through an exploration of markmaking on scratchboard.
Homework:
Find a high contrast image of a beloved pet, favorite animal, or other interesting creature that exhibits texture. Make sure you crop your subject matter so that you eliminate most or all of the background, zoom in on details, and highlight interesting negative spaces. Change your picture to black and white and the dimensions should be 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" - constrain proportions to arrive at this through cropping, NOT stretching. Upload your image to Canvas. Final Criteria: ①Light logic: Did you accurately place the light, medium, and dark values of your picture? ②Linear value: did you use line to create value by using thin vs. thick and close vs. spaced lines? ③Accuracy: Does your drawing look like your reference photo? ④Craftsmanship: Did you use the tool correctly and take your time to create careful work? |
SketchbookPractice: become familiar with scratchboard as a medium and use the etching tool to inscribe varying marks into your test strip.
Make sure that the strip of scratchboard is taped into your sketchbook and labeled with the following techniques:
